Our First Foster: Abner

Abner7
We spent Saturday last morning at the bi-weekly Tampa Bay Beagle Rescue adoption event in Seffner, FL (just outside of Tampa). The rescue holds the adoption event at this park once a month and another one in Tampa once a month. (You can view the calendar of events here.) It took a little over an hour to get there but we were excited to meet the volunteers of the TBBR organization and our first foster pup, Abner.

Meet Abner

Abner is a sweet pup that was sent down from a shelter in Mississippi because apparently hounds don’t do well in shelters there and are at a higher risk to be put down. He made the long trek down to the Tampa area on Friday and stayed with another volunteer who brought him to the adoption event on Saturday.

We spent a good portion of the day following Abner around the park to try to pet him but he was extremely timid and was nervous around new people. When we finally got the chance to pet him, he sank down to the ground and looked up with his sweet beagle eyes as he started to understand that we weren’t there to hurt him. We made sure he got all of his preventatives (heart worm and flea/tick medication) and he was chipped right there at the park before we took him home. He loves car rides and fell asleep on the floor of the car on the way home. He loved the car so much that he didn’t want to get out once we got home!

Once we finally got him out and into the house, his beagle senses kicked in and he was off exploring the house! He got to meet Cali who was surprisingly good with him considering it typically takes her a little while to warm up to new dogs and all three beagles played until nap time.

Overall, I would say it was a pretty successful first day of being a foster parent! There were no puppy fights, no accidents in the house, he ate his dinner, and warmed up to us enough to snuggle until bed time. He slept in the crate without a problem although we did have to move it into the bedroom as he doesn’t like to be alone.

We won’t have a problem at all finding this sweet baby a forever home! ♥
